Description: Participants will learn how to effectively utilize the revised elementary literacy curriculum map to plan instruction for the first quarter. Through guided practice, they will pace out key content and cross-reference the standards being taught with the standards for which grades will be collected. By the end of the session, participants will have developed organized, standards-aligned lesson plans for the first quarter—providing a strong foundation for planning subsequent quarters with consistency and clarity.

2025 Summer SPLASH | Teaching Hard History at Historic Stagville: A Place-Based Learning Experience | Facilitated by Curriculum and Instruction | Open District-Wide | Hillside High School Room 202

Location: Hillside High School Room 202
Description: Spend the day immersed in the powerful history of Historic Stagville, one of North Carolina’s largest pre–Civil War plantations. Participants will take a guided tour led by Stagville staff, gaining firsthand insight into the lives of the enslaved people who lived and labored on the land. Following the tour, educators will engage in a hands-on lesson planning workshop using primary source documents from the Stagville archives. Together, we will explore how to bring this history to life in the classroom through inquiry-based instruction and document analysis. Participants must pre-register by emailing charlene_martinklein@dpsnc.net before August 1.
