Description: The Duke-DPS-NAF Summer Institute is a three-day intensive workshop designed to help elementary and secondary educators bring primary source-based activities to their students to increase civic awareness and engagement. The Summer Institute will build on the theme "We the People" as Duke and NAF commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Sessions will focus on how to leverage primary (historical documents, photos, video, etc.) and secondary sources (documentaries, biographies, etc.) into classroom lessons. Sessions will also include an introduction to local Durham history and be supplemented with lectures from several Duke and NCCU faculty with expertise in history and law. This institute will run from Monday June 22-Wednesday June 24.

Description: Move beyond the "rotation schedule" and transform small group instruction into a high-impact engine for student growth. This session provides school leaders with the tools to ensure small group time is a targeted extension of rigorous Tier 1 standards rather than a departure from core content. Participants will examine effective models across subject areas, learn to distinguish between simple engagement and deep learning, and identify the "look-fors" of high-quality, data-driven differentiation.

Participants will explore strategic scheduling models that maximize instructional time and ensure targeted support for all learners. The session will highlight best practices for monitoring student progress and leveraging district resources—including ALEKS, i-Ready, Reading Plus, and StudySync—to personalize learning pathways across content areas. Leaders will also learn how to facilitate impactful student data chats and support teachers in using real-time data to design responsive, small-group instruction in ELA, math, and science.
