About me
Dr. LaVerne Mattocks-Perry is a career educator, leadership coach, and departmental supervisor who is committed to the continuous improvement of schools through strengthening 'whole child wellness' as a primary component of education and schooling. Dr. Mattocks-Perry is a native of Oriental, North Carolina, and attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington for her undergraduate studies. She earned her Master's in School Administration at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Mattocks-Perry received her doctorate in Educational Leadership and Supervision from North Carolina State University. She has participated in the Education Policy Fellow program of the North Carolina Public School Forum, was a Goodmon Fellow in the Leadership Triangle program, and has served on the board of a local nonprofit organization to serve homeless families in the region.
Much of Dr. Mattocks-Perry's leadership has been centered around equitable access and opportunity in the K-12 public education system. Dr. Mattocks-Perry often presents on issues regarding Carrer & College Readiness, Social Emotional Learning, and Restorative Practices as a guiding cultural framework for schools. As a result of this courageous leadership, Dr. Mattocks-Perry was awarded the Social Educator to Watch Award in 2021 by the North Carolina Association for Middle Level Education to acknowledge her effective leadership in advancing social equity across schools, school districts, and the state. Dr. Mattocks-Perry is often viewed as a resident expert and has given numerous interviews on pertinent issues in education.
Dr. Mattocks-Perry counts as one of her (s)heroes, the late Dr. Lorraine Monroe, for her high expectations for all students-especially those living in abject poverty. Dr. Mattocks-Perry believes in a balanced approach to helping students realize their maximum potential as scholars. When asked about her leadership philosophy, she often quotes her favorite author, Toni Morrison, "As you enter positions of trust & power, dream a little before you think."
