Middle School Science teachers will receive curriculum and resource updates for the 2023-2024 school year, focusing on the newly adopted K-12 Science Standards. This session is required for all 6-8 science teachers.
Discover how to extend you teaching practice by integrating the outdoors into your science curriculum! Learn about the benefits of outdoor learning and how you can take your students outside while addressing state science standards. We will look at both schoolyard application and potential partnerships in the greater Durham Area.
This interactive session will showcase the use of locally relevant energy stories, online mapping tools, and resources, such as an evaluation scorecard, to introduce the concept of energy justice and prompt learners to envision and take action to promote a 4just transition4 to a clean energy future.
The STEP Outside program addresses teacher-identified barriers commonly faced when taking students outdoors: safety, finding appropriate spaces, and adapting curriculum for more engagement. During the session, you will learn strategies that work for your school, its space, and its outdoor classroom. The program shares hands-on science and literacy activities that are aligned with specific North Carolina Essential Standards.
Expanding the Gizmos Experience helps teachers develop a deeper understanding of how to integrate Gizmos into their curriculum, and effective uses of whole group and small group instruction. The course shows teachers how to get the most from the Gizmo Lesson Materials by making these intentional instructional decisions. In the workshop, the instructor models best practices for using Gizmos in a whole class setting as well as a small group setting. Teachers work individually or in small groups to integrate best teaching practices with Gizmos into their curriculum.

This workshop allows educators to experience four of the science practices embedded within exemplary Gizmo lessons. Consequently, participants develop a deeper understanding of the Scientific and Engineering Practices and how those practices look in the classroom. They also learn to develop effective lessons around the practices that allow students to develop a deep conceptual understanding of underlying scientific principles. Participants will learn best practices for using Gizmos to support the practices where students can develop and use models, analyze data, use mathematics, and construct scientific explanations about the concepts involved.
