Welcome to the Durham Public Schools Professional Learning Schedule of Professional Learning! Here you will find a comprehensive list of PL sessions occurring throughout our district.
Teachers will complete the tasks in their workbook and discuss the chapter in the context of their instruction as well as provide useful resources to their general education colleagues when applicable.
Schools will choose and customize their family outreach using the resources provided by the district, informing and empowering families with information to support student academic success
Participants will learn about effective strategies (and outcomes) that promote student/student and student/teacher interactions. During the session we will brainstorm and discuss the benefits of interaction within the classroom or small group settings for all students followed by practicing the use of Interaction Strategies in the classroom.
4Getting to Know Your ELs4 for administrators and refresher/updated content for those who have already engaged in this learning. School leaders will gain a strong understanding of their school's EL population, including goals for growth and proficiency.
Teachers will learn comprehensive strategies for planning and delivering effective instruction to English Learners. SIOP (Sheltered Immersion Observation Protocol) strategies are designed to teach academic language in any content area, including math, social studies, science, ELA, or electives.

Participants will explore student-friendly can-do descriptors to gain a clear picture of what is appropriate to expect of students at each level, and specific activities and strategies to push their language growth.
ESL Teachers will explore the latest English Language Development standards to incorporate their structures and principles into lesson plans and support language development in the content areas.
School leaders will develop their capacity to observe appropriate classroom instruction for ELs, and be able to communicate their expectations to staff. *NOTE* This session is a self-paced online course from WIDA. It can be completed at any time before December 2023.
ESL teachers will choose the self-paced WIDA course that best fits their school/student/professional learning needs. Options include content-area sessions for math, science, ELA, and social studies, as well as PLC guidance, newcomers, or working with Long-Term English Learners. *NOTE* this is a self-paced online course that can be completed anytime before December 2023. Participants will need a secure portal account through WIDA, contact ESL director for more information.

Schools will provide support and engagement sessions for families, including ACCESS prep, helping EL students with homework, attendance and behavior expectations, etc.
This sessions goals are to review test specifications, discuss the necessary preparation for meeting our school wide writing goal, and reviewing strategies for focused writing.
