Welcome to the Durham Public Schools Professional Learning Schedule of Professional Learning! Here you will find a comprehensive list of PL sessions occurring throughout our district.
This session is for all K-5 classroom teachers. K-5 classroom teachers will meet their Curriculum and Instruction team, deepen their understanding of curriculum resources, and have the opportunity to dive deeper into content based on their needs.
Year Round MTSS facilitators and coaches will deepen their understanding of Individual Reading Plans and understand how to guide their school-based teams in completing this legislative requirement.
Traditional MTSS facilitators and coaches will deepen their understanding of the DIBELS 8 benchmark and Amplify platform and understand how to guide their school-based teams in completing these legislative requirements. This session will be offered two times (August 15th and August 22nd).

Participants will explore the components of HMH small group resources and their alignment to core instruction. Participants will engage in data driven activities to pair student need with the best HMH small group resources.
Participants will collaborate with their PLCs to analyze grade level EOY data in order to plan targeted core instruction at the beginning of the school year.
Traditional MTSS facilitators and coaches will deepen their understanding of the DIBELS 8 benchmark and Amplify platform and understand how to guide their school-based teams in completing these legislative requirements. This session will be offered two times (August 15th and August 22nd).

Teachers at Fayetteville Street Elementary will deepen their knowledge of high leverage HMH resources and how to plan effective literacy instruction with the HMH curriculum.
This refresher session will go over mClass screener and progress monitoring procedures for traditional teachers of grades K-5. Teachers who are not familiar with mClass and/or would like a refresher on mClass procedures should attend.

Participants will explore the structural design and components of the HMH core phonics resources. Participants will walk through a lesson and learn tips for planning and modifying resources to meet student needs.
Coaches and MTSS Facilitators will attend a Train the Trainer session on Individual Reading Plans (IRPs). IRPs are required by DPI to target student needs based on benchmark mCLASS data. Participants will receive information and materials to facilitate training with their school teams and support implementation of the developed IRPs.
K-5 Literacy coaches are encouraged to join us for HMH Coach Content Leadership Institute. This year's institute will focus on how to refine our in-classroom and PLC coaching to ensure our students' literacy growth and success. This institute will run for 6 sessions; September 14th, October 19th, November 9th, February 15th, March 21st, April 18.
This session is for George Watts teachers only. Time for staff to work on LETRS Volume 2 asynchronous work as well as discuss implementation strategies.
During the PLC, coaches will connect and collaborate with their peers to process new learning from the Volume 2 unit; identify connections between LETRS and DPS curriculums, assessments, and processes; practice coaching instructional routines from LETRS, and receive ready to use materials to facilitate the LETRS PLC at their schools.
Teachers NEW to ARC or HMH will deepen their understanding of the programs and how to plan meaningful literacy instruction with our core literacy curriculums.

This session is required for Year Round staff who are completing LETRS Volume 1 during the 23 - 24 school year. This session will cover the content from Unit 1 of LETRS Volume 1. The session will open at 8:15 and begin at 8:30. There will be an hour long lunch break from 11:30 - 12:30. The session will conclude at 3:30. Participants are encouraged to have their LETRS Volume 1 manual and the linked participant handouts with them during the session.

Instructional Assistants will learn about the science of reading aligned intervention program UFLI. Participants will walkthrough and practice a lesson to learn how to meet the different learning levels of students in the classroom.
K-5 Literacy coaches are encouraged to join us for HMH Coach Content Leadership Institute. This year's institute will focus on how to refine our in-classroom and PLC coaching to ensure our students' literacy growth and success. This institute will run for 6 sessions; September 14th, October 19th, November 9th, February 15th, March 21st, April 18.
Teachers at Bethesda will deepen their understanding of targeted small group instruction and connect it to the HITS of differentiation and structured lessons. Connections to HMH curriculum resources will also be present.
This session is for year round kindergarten teachers. This will be a refresher of the ELI 60-Day Checkpoint, including how to input the checkpoint into the ELI system.

Teachers will explore the various resources they can use to facilitate small group instruction. Teachers will learn to plan for small group reading lessons. This topic will span over the course of 3-4 sessions

This session is for K-5 teachers at Burton Elementary.Participants will understand the nuance between 4centers4 and 4structured independent practice4, how to plan for meaningful structured independent practice, and how to connect this learning to HMH resources.

This professional development sessions reviews procedures learned in the beginning of the year surrounding the process of backwards planning. Teachers will meet with their grade level teams and use the Backwards Design process to plan for the next 2 weeks of instruction in ELA
Expectations for session:Core5 Class-Level Reports- targeted with Class Overview and Skill Progress.-EOG Validity/DIBELS Validity, along with the connection to LETRS-Quick Check on some big Core5 ideas: Instructional Branching, unit expectations, information apple, and how the need for offline support is indicated.-Class Overview big ideas, including units gained and predictors.-Skill Progress Report- Connect this to the Detailed Scope and Sequence to emphasize skills teachers can target in their small or whole group instruction. For phonics instruction/lessons, can use UFLI.-Core5 Skill Checks- new for Sy 23-24-Instructional Resources- emphasize Slide Decks, decodable readers, fluency passages, and close reads.
