In addition to supporting K-4 science, this session will serve as the 1st 5th grade Science PLC of the year's series. **Highly recomended for all 5th grade science teachers**

Place-based explorations for examining the science of and solutions to extreme heat in Durham | In-Person at Southern | Science | 9th-12th | Choice Session | Traditional Kickoff

Attendees will be introduced to a 4-part lesson series designed for DPS teachers to engage students in learning about extreme heat and the urban heat island in Durham, NC. These place-based activities can be customized for a school’s campus and invite students to (1) use sensors to explore microclimates on their school grounds, (2) explore maps of heat, environmental factors, and demographic indicators to identify people and places in Durham most vulnerable to extreme heat, and (3) evaluate individual and community level solutions to address extreme heat and heat waves.
