Welcome to the Durham Public Schools Professional Learning Schedule of Professional Learning! Here you will find a comprehensive list of PL sessions occurring throughout our district.
**Participants must attend BOTH sessions.** Day 1: This 12-hour workshop (two 6-hour sessions) will focus on educating students ages 5-18 with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), who spend the majority of their day in the general education classroom following the standard course of study. Participants will learn about the characteristics and learning styles of ASD and strategies to address educational and social emotional issues that affect success in the general education classroom. The format of this workshop will include presentations, videos, interactive discussions based on case studies and small group activities.
This session will focus on the following: Articulate a district-wide, common understanding of equity and its impact on student outcomes;Explore identity and its influence on our work with students;Begin to reduce the impact of implicit bias by acknowledging it;Reflect on the role of SROs as restorative leaders in schools and the Durham community.

This collaborative meeting of ELEMENTARY SCHOOL professional school counselors, school social workers, student success coaches, and mental health coaches to review the progress that has been made for with our shared initiatives (Tier 1 activities, comprehensive programs, enhancing daily attendance, bullying prevention, and mental health awareness).

Culture Shapers—Culture Shapers is a half-day learning experience for your auxiliary staff (non teaching) . It is designed to give them an overview of Capturing Kids’ Hearts processes specific to their role where they will learn how they help shape the culture for your campus. Your Culture Shapers team should be made up of custodians, bus drivers, cafeteria staff, secretaries, and other folks who are in the school buildings who interact with students from time to time.

Consequently, participants develop a deeper understanding of the Scientific and Engineering Practices and how those practices look in the classroom. They also learn to develop effective lessons around the practices that allow students to develop a deep conceptual understanding of underlying scientific principles. Participants will learn best practices for using Gizmos to support the practices where students can develop and use models, analyze data, use mathematics, and construct scientific explanations about the concepts involved.
